The Mir sailing ship welcomes new cadets on its board

The second shift of cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping went aboard the FSUE “Rosmorport” Mir sailing ship in the seaport of Big Port St Petersburg on July 9, 2019. A total of 132 cadets will undergo training aboard the frigate till September 8 and will be able to show their knowledge and skills, and learn how to work in a team.

While forming a program for cadets aboard FSUE “Rosmorport” sailing ships special attention is given to taking part in international events so that future sailors could acquire necessary knowledge, broaden their outlook, practice foreign languages and study the specifics of foreign ports. Thus, during the two-month voyage, the previous shift of cadets passed almost five thousand nautical miles and visited the seaports of Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Kiel (Germany), Rouen (France) and Scheveningen (the Hague, the Netherlands). The crew and the cadets took an active part in all the events, including the celebrations marking the anniversary of the founding of the seaport of Hamburg, and in the Seatownevent and Kieler Week festivals. The victory of the frigate in Liberty Tall Ships Regatta 2019 became one of the most dramatic events.

During next shift, the sailing ship will take part in the second stage of Tall Ships Race 2019 and visit the ports of Germany, Norway and Denmark. Cadets will be able to train practical issues related to navigation training, the construction of vessels and the functioning of seaborne machinery. Moreover, the cadets will grasp all the complicacies of the frigate’s rig and acquire practical skills to handle it. The program also envisages training to put a vessel in a seaworthy way and use radio navigation devices for ensuring navigation safety. The cadets will also be able to train skills, which are vital for any sailor, such as preventing fire aboard a ship and using rescue equipment and devices.
