Mir sailing ship returns home

Mir sailing ship returned to the home port – the seaport of Big Port St Petersburg September 11, 2018. A total of 132 students of the industry’s educational institutions ended their training aboard the ship.

The frigate got the victory in the major international regatta, Tall Ships Races 2018, and returned home with a cup. The regatta took place from July 14 to August 4. Based on the results of all stages of the competitions the Mir sailing ship came first in its class. A separate prize as the fastest sailing ship was given to the FSUE “Rosmorport” ship.

While in the naval capital crewmembers and cadets were welcomed by deputy director for economics and finances of the FSUE “Rosmorport” North-Western Basin Branch Nadezhda Kalashnik, rector of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Military Education “Admiral S.O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping” Sergei Baryshnikov and director of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Military Education “Admiral S.O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping” Alexander Gorobtsov.

The guests congratulated the sailing ship’s captain, Andrei Orlov, and crewmembers on the victory. A warm reception has been organized aboard the ship.

Kalashnik congratulated crewmembers of the Mir sailing ship and representatives of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Military Education “Admiral S.O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping” on their achievements. She stressed that the successful performance had become possible due to the fruitful joint work and the efforts taken by FSUE “Rosmorport” and the university both in forming the qualified crew and maintaining the ship’s technical readiness at a high level and the crew of experienced team and the best, determined and self-motivated cadets.

A solemn awarding ceremony was held in honor of the regatta. Honorable letters and gifts were given to crewmembers, who had shown their experience, skills and knowledge during the race. 

A new, third, shift of cadets of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “Admiral S.O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping” went aboard the Mir sailing ship in the seaport of Big Port St Petersburg September 12, 2018. These are 132 students, who will undergo navigation training on the frigate till November 15.

Over two months, young sailors have to hone their skills on navigation and piloting, the construction of the ship and study the operation of shipborne machinery and many other things. Moreover, they will be able to take in all difficulties to make the ship’s rigging and gain practical skills in its handling.

During the third cruise due to be held this year, the sailing ship will visit the ports of Estonia and France.
