Results of “My port 2018” project summed up

In 2018 FSUE “Rosmorport” continued implementing an education project “My Port”. The project, which has already existed for three years, is aimed at popularizing professions of maritime and port affairs, developing patriotic education of the future generation and strengthening respect to the glorious historic past of Russia as the great maritime power.

This summer a total of 175 boys and girls with the age of 10-15 years old from 20 Russian regions have become participants in two thematic maritime shifts in the best children’s centers of the country – the All-Russian Orlyonok children’s center and the Artek International Children’s Center.

This year the Maritime Federal Resource Center for Children’s Extended Education of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Military Education “Admiral S.O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping” has been involved in the project. The University held a competition to select children who would take part in thematic shifts based. Specialists of the center have also developed programs of extended education “The Ocean of My Dream” and “The Sea – Romantics – Profession”.

Over three weeks the participants in the FSUE “Rosmorport” shifts have succeeded in studying maritime professions, functions of the fleet personnel on different vessels and engineering duties, tasks to service the port coastal infrastructure and provide logistics. Children studied the classification of civil cargo and passenger vessels, the infrastructure of Russian major seaports. At the classes devoted to ship modelling “The Seaport on the Palm” theoretical knowledge has translated into creating models of cranes, ferries, tankers, dry cargo carriers and other vessels. Cardboard cutouts of seaports have been made.

Training has been held not only in classrooms. Fascinating excursions and master classes have been organized for the children. During regattas, the crews passed more than 10 nautical miles in the water area of the Black Sea under oars and sails, acquired skills to make 10 major knots, studied issues related to safety at sea and rendering first medical aid. They also studied the major outfit of a cock boat (over 60 elements) and rigging of the Yal-6 cock boat and a yacht of ¾ tons class.

The visit and marine practice studies aboard the Khersones training sailing ship, as well as the participation in joint maritime competitions, including in pulling and sailing races – the regatta “Rosmorport Cup”, which has been held for the first time within the thematic shift at the Artek International Children’s Center, have become the central event of both shifts.

During all the activities, experienced professors and recognized experts from St Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Sevastopol and Yalta have been helping the young sailors.

Knowledge acquired during the shifts and skills will be useful not only for those who is going to continue studies at a maritime university but also for children who head for land professions.
