The Khersones sailing ship ends participation in “Crimean Around the World 2018” expedition

The Khersones sailing ship has ended its route of the Crimean Around the World 2018 expedition. The FSUE “Rosmorport” frigate has become the major participant in the maritime part of the training expedition during which the sailing ship passed over 300 nautical miles.

Totally, 900 people have taken part in the events. The research group included students and professors from 18 major Russian universities and research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, cadets undergoing training on the Khersones sailing ship.

The expedition crew conducted underwater archaeological research works and listened to lectures of major specialists and scientists. In order to popularize maritime sports, healthy lifestyle and Russian maritime traditions the Marine Soul boating holiday has been held in the Artek International Children’s Center. Children raw boats, played football and took part in tug-of-war competitions.

During the expedition, crewmembers of the Khersones sailing ship conducted underwater archaeological survey and hydroacoustic research operations at Mount Ayu-Dag, Adalar Cliffs of the outer harbor of the seaport of Sevastopol and the water area of Pribrezhnoye. The research group conducted 48 diving operations. The group localized two areas with the accumulation of medieval-era ceramics and found several anchors of the Byzantine period.

The onshore part of the expedition made up 1,100 km and included 17 field passages. The group conducts observations, researches and project operations in Kerch, Sudak, Feodosia, Saki, Alushta and Yevpatoria. During the expedition, the participants in the project went sightseeing of the peninsula, organized creative performances, master classes and took part in the Marine Bravery memory watch. Meetings have been held with schoolchildren, students and holiday-makers of sports and recreation centers.

Every stage of the expedition has been named in honor of the historical area of Crimea – Cimmeria, Tavrida, Khersonesida, Skiffia and Theodoro.

The purpose of this project is to make popular the historical and cultural heritage of the peninsula, provide vocational guidance of the youth and create conditions for realizing students’ creative potential.

The event has been held due to support provided by the Government of the Republic of Crimea, the Government of Sevastopol, the Sevastopol State University, the Regatta International shipping agency and several public organizations.
