The Khersones sailing ship receives new shift of cadets

A new shift of cadets of Sedov Water Transport Institute, the branch of Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University, went aboard the Khersones sailing ship in Sevastopol on May 31, 2018.

Eighty young sailors will undergo navigation training in the Black Sea aboard the legendary frigate. Over three months, the cadets have to follow up navigation and pilots’ training, study the ship’s construction and its control, operation of seaborne machinery, electric navigational equipment and many other issues. In addition, they will be able to study all complexities of the sailing ship’s rig and acquire practical skills of ship handling.

Representatives of FSUE “Rosmorport” and the maritime educational institution have come to support the children. The participants in the parade stressed that adventures under sails awaited the cadets. The life aboard the ship will be informative and intensive.

Training on the Khersones sailing ship is not only the possibility to feel maritime romantics but the unique means to learn and pick up a lot. Cadets will visit the seaports of Novorossiysk, Sevastopol, Yalta and Sochi. They will be given lectures on navigation, technical aids to navigation and the theory of the ship’s construction.

By maritime tradition, before sailing the young sailors and crewmembers have gotten blessing by Sevastopol Archpriest Sergei Khalyuta.

The first shift of cadets underwent training on the Khersones sailing ship from April 3 to May 30, 2018. A total of 107 students of Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University and Volga State University of Water Transport have sharpened their theoretical skills and developed practical skills aboard the ship. Upon completion of the sea expedition students acquired navigation qualifications necessary for further work in the specialty.
