The Khersones Sailing Ship Cup oared sailing regatta held in Yalta

The Khersones Sailing Ship Cup oared sailing regatta in Yal-6 Class was held in the seaport of Yalta on May 5-6, 2018. The event is held in order to make sailing sports and maritime professions popular among young sailors and students of maritime higher education establishments.

A total of seven crews took part in the regatta. Crews of the children-teenager category involved students of the Yalta Children’s Maritime Center and the Russian Sailing School. Youth teams involved cadets of the Khersones sailing ship and the team of counselors of the Artek International Children’s Center.

The regatta was held on Yal-6 oared-sailing boats that FSUE “Rosmorport” had presented to the Artek International Children’s Center in 2015.

Awards were given to winners aboard the Khersones sailing ship. The solemn ceremony involved chairman of the Yalta city council Svetlana Bazilyuk, master of the Khersones sailing ship Dmitry Teslenko, master of the seaport of Yalta, chairman of the public organization “Young Marine League of Crimea” Boris Furman, head of the Yalta Children’s Maritime Center Olga Yakovleva, director of the Regatta International maritime agency Oleg Ponomarenko, director of the Russian sailing school Alexander Megelsky and famous Russian traveler, producer Leonid Kruglov.

The competition was very interesting and engaging. The suspense was intense till the last second. The team of the Khersones sailing ship succeeded in winning the victory. Caretakers of the Artek International Children’s Center came second. Cadets of the frigate came third.

Upon giving awards to winners of the Khersones Sailing Ship Cup the guests congratulated all attendees with the end of the first oared-sailing race and wished young cadets successful training on the frigate. They expressed the hope that future sailors would bring their love to sea in their future profession.

During the solemn ceremony, the first performance of a film on the history and everyday work of the Khersones sailing ship took place. The film was produced by Yalta Children Maritime Television. Further tugging war competitions continued the holiday. Any person will be able to compete and show their strength and swiftness for the title of the strongest team. A traditional “sweet” prize – the box of milk jam has been reserved for winners.

A chantie-choir of the Khersones sailing ship performed a composition upon end of the events. Musicians sang traditional songs of world sailors. Head of the English choir, English Element, Peter Dison has been especially invited to take part in the holiday.

The regatta has been held with the support of FSUE “Rosmorport”, crewmembers and cadets of the Khersones sailing ship, the administration of Yalta, the Artek International Children’s Center, the Youth Maritime League of Crimea regional public organization, the Russian sailing school and the Regatta International maritime agency.

Oar and sailing races are organized by different clubs, Russian military and civil maritime educational establishments on the regular basis. The major task of such events is to provide cultural, historical and military-patriotic education of the young generation.
