The seaport of Sabetta shows record cargo tonnage

At the yearend 2017 the seaport of Sabetta had the lead of the growth of cargo tonnage among Russian seaports. Liquefied natural gas transshipment in the seaport of Sabetta increased by 280.7% with respect to 2016 and made up 7.987 million tons, 6.514 million tons of which came from the Novoportovskiy deposit.

Sabetta is an Arctic seaport in the watch settlement on the western coast of the Gulf of Ob of Kara sea. The port is designed for developing the South Tambey gas condensate deposit, shipping and transporting liquefied natural gas and gas condensate. The new seaport facilitates the social and economic development of northern territories and the strengthening of Russia’s role in the Arctic region. Liquefied natural gas transshipment has become possible due to the implementation of the project “The Construction of the Seaport Facilities in the Settlement of Sabetta, Including the Creation of a Marine Approach Canal in the Gulf of Ob”in accordance to Russia’s Government Resolution No 1713-r of October 11, 2010 “On the Comprehensive Plan for Developing Production of Liquefied Natural Gas on Yamal Peninsula”.

Under the project, FSUE “Rosmorport” builds facilities of federal ownership, i.e. seaway and approach canals, water areas of the port, ice protection structures, the navigation safety system, aids to navigation, administrative and technical premises. What’s unique here is that the construction works were being carried out from scratch in the Arctic climate zone.

As a result of dredging operations in Sabetta a seaway canal of 49 meters in length, an approach canal of six meters in length and the 138-ha water area of the seaport have been formed. The achieved depth will give a possibility for 300-m gas tankers with 12 meters in load draught to call at the seaport all year round.

The construction of facilities of federal ownership is scheduled to be over by April 2018.
