A working meeting was held in St Petersburg on January 25, 2018 to discuss the construction of the Viktor Chernomyrdin linear diesel-electric icebreaker of Project 22600.

The meeting involved Rosmorrechflot deputy head Viktor Vovk, FSUE “Rosmorport” acting deputy General Director for the fleet Ilya Aleksandrov and chief of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Directorate for the Fleet Development and Construction Vladimir Shtrambrand, as well as representatives of JSC “OSK” and JSC “Admiralty Shipyards”.

The participants in the meeting inspected the construction of the icebreaker and noted the considerable work rate growth. At the moment the ship hull and the deck structure have been formed. The works are carried out to tighten a high-tension cable, lay a pipeline and make preparations on the isolation mount in rooms. The works are completed to set foundation for equipment. About 600 specialists of the shipyard are involved to carry out these works.

During the working meeting, the participants discussed the construction schedule of the icebreaker and the procedure for approving developed project documentation of the ship under construction. A series of decisions has been taken to specify additional measures aimed at strengthening cooperation with contracting entities.

The Viktor Chernomyrdin is the lead ship of an innovative project. The vessel is capable of becoming a base platform for icebreakers of next generations. The project has a series of resolutions, which differ it from icebreakers of the previous generation: high icebreaking capability and maneuverability, the D.P. system, the high level of automation, two helicopter-mounted systems and the possibility of installing a cargo crane of high capacity (up to 150 tons). The up-to-date electric movement system has been applied on the icebreaker. The icebreaker is built within the framework of realization of the federal target program “The Development of Russia’s Transport System (2010-2020)” under order of Rosmorrechflot for FSUE “Rosmorport”.

The icebreaker was launched on December 30, 2016.
