FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreaker completes pilotage of a convoy on the Northern Sea Route

On December 1, 2017 the Admiral Makarov icebreaker completed pilotage of a convoy of vessels from the seaport of Pevek to safe water in the Kara Strait connecting the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea.

The convoy passed over 2.000 nautical miles despite the severe weather conditions in the Sannikov Strait and the Vilkitsky Strait. The FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreaker provided support of three dry cargo vessels – the Taimyr, the Sabetta and the Iohann Mahmastal. The dry cargo vessels successfully finished the delivery of materials and elements of building structures to construct a coastal infrastructure of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant.

According to the plan of the voyage, the Yamal nuclear icebreaker provided further support of the Iohann Mahmastal. Taimyr and Sabetta dry cargo vessels continued following the FSUE «Rosmorport» icebreaker westward.

Specialists of the hydrometeorological service and experts in ice navigation studied the situation on the Northern Sea Route for prompt performance of the task. Previously the weather reports, actual maps and satellite photos of the ice situation were received.

At present, the Admiral Makarov icebreaker is in the seaport of Murmansk where it is preparing to fulfill tasks for the winter navigation in the White Sea.
