FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreaker provides support on Northern Sea Route

On November 16, 2017 the Admiral Makarov icebreaker started providing support for a convoy of vessels heading from the seaport of Pevek westwards through the ices before entering open water.

The FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreaker has to ensure movement of three vessels to the point of Kara Sea: the Taimyr, the Sabetta and the Johann Machmastal dry cargo carriers that have successfully completed the delivery of materials and elements of building constructions to erect the coastal infrastructure of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear thermoelectric power station.

It is planned that it will take at least 10-12 days to provide support for the convoy. Ice conditions are described as moderately severe. However, the vessels have to go through occlusion sections of ice reefing and ice push in the vicinity of Sannikov Strait and Vilkitski Strait.

Hydrometeorological data, actual maps and satellite images of the ice situation have been preliminarily received to search for an optimal route. Moreover, specialists of the hydrometeorological service and experts in ice navigation are continuously making an analysis of the situation on the Northern Sea Route.

Upon completing support the Admiral Makarov icebreaker is scheduled to continue the work in the White Sea.
