Artek International Children’s Center Flotilla Competes Championship in a Regatta

Educatees of the Artek International Children’s Center took part in the Khersones Sailing Ship Cup regatta in Yalta on September 16, 2017.

Young yachtsmen of the Artek Children’s Flotilla competed with athletes of the Yalta City Children’s Maritime Center. The competitions were very interesting and fascinating. The intrigue has continued till the last second. Young sailors of the Artek Flotilla got a victory. They succeeded in keeping cool and grab out a victory in final seconds.

The participants in the competition have been awarded aboard the Khersones sailing ship. The ceremony involved the ship’s Captain, Dmitry Teslenko, Chairman of the All-Russian Public Organization “Youth Maritime League of Crimea”, Yalta Port Captain Boris Furman, Director of the Yalta Children’s Maritime Center Olga Yakovleva, Director of the Regatta International Maritime Agency Oleg Ponomarenko. Mayor Vil Sarychev, who took part in the military actions during the Great Patriotic War and who is the oldest yachtsman of Crimea, master of sport of the USSR in ski jumping and car rally, has become an honorable guest of the regatta. Addressing the young sailors, Dmitry Teslenko expressed the hope that jack tars would transform their love of sea into future professions.

The ship’s crew and cadets of the industry’s educational institutions congratulated the winners. Cadets who underwent training on the ship conducted a fascinating excursion and told the guests about the ship’s construction. Experienced sailors told interesting stories on long-distance voyages. Master classes on maritime disciplines were organized for children: binding nautical knots and up-to-date navigation methods, the work with the sails.

In addition, participants in the educational program organized environmental patrolling of the water area of the children’s center and took water samples to study them in the chemical laboratory. Rear Admiral Kirill Tulin, head of the unique rescue operations in 1949, has become a scientific expert.

While on the sea, the participants in environmental patrolling took water samples in the water area at the cliffs of Adalar and conducted visual observations. Children assessed the degree of the water transparency, noted the absence of oil strains on the surface and the signs of blooming. The sample of seawater will be examined at a digital chemical laboratory. The results of the researches will be compared with data of the samples that had been taken earlier and sent for expertise at the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Data of environmental monitoring and the results given by professional chemists will make it possible to receive objective information on the environmental situation in the water area of the Artek center.

Children could take part in fascinating and cognitive events due to the Water Area of the Future program. This is a spectrum of practical studies related to maritime affairs and theoretical training devoted to the development of key cognitive skills among children.

The purpose of the FSUE “Rosmorport” program is to contribute to patriotic education of the young generation and to strengthen respect to the glorious past of Russia as a sea power. The project has been worked out by a group of experts in the field of extended education programs and it is aimed at promoting professions in the field of maritime affairs and supporting maritime traditions.
