Icebreaker of 21900M Project Hull Float Out Ceremony

At Vyborg shipyard on April 29, 2014 the float out ceremony of the 21900M project icebreaker hull was held, the construction of which had been carried out on the Atlant semisubmersible platform specially constructed for this purpose.
 
The ceremony was attended by Yuri Kostin, Deputy Chief of Rosmorrechflot, Andrey Lavrishchev, Executive Director of FSUE “Rosmorport”, the employees of the enterprise headquarters, the representatives of OJSC “Vyborg Shipyard” and OJSC “United Shipbuilding Corporation”, the specialists of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, as well as the Head of the Vyborg municipal district of the Leningrad Region and the employees of the Vladivostok city Administration.
 
The head icebreaker of 21900M project hull which is planned to be called “Vladivostok” has been floated out. The two following icebreakers of the three icebreaker series will be named “Murmansk” and “Novorossiysk”.
 
Icebreakers of 21900M project are the more sophisticated diesel-electric icebreakers in comparison with 21900 project based on which the Moskva and Sankt-Peterburg icebreakers have been previously built. The updated project has reflected suggestions based on the experience of the practical operation by FSUE “Rosmorport” of the Moskva and Sankt-Peterburg icebreakers in the Baltic Sea during the winter navigations. Implementation of the unique technical solutions incorporated in the project has allowed to improve the icebreaking capability and the self-sustaining period of the new icebreakers.
 
The developer of the construction of 21900M project diesel-electric icebreakers is FSUE “Rosmorport”. Financing of the construction of vessels is provided with the use of the federal budget investments to the enterprise.
 
New icebreakers, after completion of their construction and commissioning, are planned to be used in the Baltic Sea waters in winter and in the Arctic seas in summer-autumn period for the following purposes:
- pilotage of large vessels;
- towing of vessels and the other floating constructions in ice conditions and open water;
- firefighting on floating objects and the other constructions;
- search and rescue operations and relief work for vessels in distress;
- ensuring the effective operation of scientific expeditions.
 
In addition, the functions of icebreakers will be expanded with the transportation of containers on the open part of the upper deck, including refrigerated containers with the appropriate power supply, and the other deck cargo.
