Permission to Bury Bottom Soil in the Process of Dredging & Repair Works at the Seaport of Kaliningrad Received

The North-Western Basin Branch has obtained a permission from Rosprirodnadzor No. 108M of 11.05.2017 for burying bottom soil extracted in the process of dredging and repair works at the Seaport of Kaliningrad, in the Baltic Sea.

In accordance with the permission, the sites for dumping the bottom soil are located to the northeast (area 304) and to the south of the entering bulwarks at the Kaliningrad Sea Channel with the total area of 376 ha.

The period for the planned disposal of the bottom soil is set from May 2017 to December 2024.

The total amount of soil extracted in the process of bottom dredging and repair works during the period from 2017 to 2024, which will be dumped in underwater dumps, shall amount to more than 10 mln. m3.

The need to carry out annual dredging and repair activities at the Seaport of Kaliningrad is due to the natural sediment accumulation of the bottom in that area.

The objects that are due to annual repair include the Kaliningrad Sea Channel, the Inland harbors of the Seaport of Kaliningrad (Volnaya and Industrialnaya), approaches to refueling stations, terminals and berths of the seaport.

The works for disposal of the bottom soil in underwater dump sites are related to the dredging works that will be carried out by  the Kaliningrad Directorate of the North-Western Basin Branch, in strict compliance with the requirements of the Natural Resources and Environment legislation of the Russian Federation and the conditions established by the granted permit.
